Omnilux™ Light Treatment Information

Frequently Asked Questions—Omnilux™

What can Omnilux™ help?
Acne (red & blue light)
Photorejuvenation
Vitiligo
Psoriasis
Post-Procedure Inflammation
Post-Operative Scarring

How does it work?
The gentle, low-powered blue light is selectively absorbed by the acne-causing bacteria, which then becomes inactive. Red light is used to stimulate the body's mechanism to heal the treated areas, as well as to reduce inflammation and redness in the skin.

What areas can be treated?
Photofacial is a series of gentle pulsed light treatments. It is ideal to treat rosacea (redness and flushing of the skin), aged skin, large pores, broken face vessels, pigment inconsistencies, brown spots and sun damage. The absence of downtime, minimal discomfort, ease of treatments, and high degree of patient satisfaction offer a number of advantages over laser skin resurfacing. People desiring a more dramatic improvement in their skin than can be accomplished with microdermabrasion or peels, will find the PhotoFace treatment and excellent choice.

What is LED Light?
Omnilux™ is a light system which uses two specific wavelengths of light to treat various skin conditions. Omnilux blue™ emits light at 415nm, destroying the harmful P.acne bacteria, a major contributor to the development of acne. Omnilux red™ delivers light at 633nm and works primarily by decreasing inflammation in the skin. This can improve acne, soothe the skin after other treatments (IPL, microdermabrasion, Aramis™) and facilitate healing after certain surgical procedures.

How long does the procedure take?
20 minutes for blue light alone and 40 minutes for both blue and red light treatments.

Is it painful?
No, although a warm sensation may be felt. Blue and red light treatments are painless and easy.

Is it safe?
Complications are extremely rare. In less than 1% of cases, skin lightning or darkening may occur. It is advisable to wear sunblock when in the sun during the month following laser treatment.

Is Omnilux™ safe?
Yes, Omnilux™ is non-invasive. Unlike other skin rejuvenation treatments, Omnilux™ is virtually painless. The procedure takes about 20 minutes; makeup can be applied and full activities resumed immediately after the treatment. It is recommended, however, that the skin be protected from sun exposure with sunblock. All patients wear protective eyewearduring the treatment. The Omnilux red™ light is very bright which may take a few minutes to get used to but it is not harmful. In fact, after a few minutes the soothing red light becomes very relaxing as it starts to work its effects.

How many treatments are required?
It depends on the severity of acne. Typically eight treatments in intervals of two treatments per week (four weeks total) are recommended.

What results can be expected?
Some see a difference in as little as three or four treatments. Although 100% of the acne symptoms may not be cleared, a significant reduction in new pimples should be noticed.

Can the blue/red light treatments be combined with other treatments?
Yes, they can be combined with other technologies that improve the surface of the skin, such as microdermabrasion and chemical peels, as part of an overall skin care routine. Various options appropriate for each individual skin type and condition are available.

Is it permanent?
Clinical studies have shown that the results can be long-lasting; however, addtiional treatments may be recommended to maintain the results.

Are there any side effects?
Mild "blushing" of the skin lasting a few minutes may occur for those with sensitive skin. No other side effects are known.

How soon can makeup be worn?
Makeup can be applied immediately after the treatment.

How soon can results be seen?
Eight sessions with red and blue light are recommended for treating acne. Most patients notice a difference by about the fourth treatment but the maximal effect is seen at 12 weeks. During this time, the patient will be monitored to determine what other interventions will hep the treatment course. The anti-inflammatory effects of the red light are often noticed within a few hours. Clinical results can be significantly improved by combining Omnilux™ treatments with traditional acne therapies like benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics and skincare products such as Bellederm clear™.

What about Photodynamic Therapy?
It may be determined that photodynamic therapy should be combined with Omnilux™ treatment. This involves using a topical drug called aminolevulinic acid before the treatment. This type of therapy can be very helpful in treating acne but involves more care and instruction for both the patient and the provider. Please refer to the separate handout on photodynamic therapy if this treatment is to be received.
