Microdermabrasion In Williamsville, NY

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation using diamond embedded wands that removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells from the face, chest, and hands. For best results, it is recommended you get a series of treatments and use in conjunction with anti-aging skincare products.

What does microdermabrasion do?

At Smooth Solutions, we use microdermabrasion for a variety of skin problems. Microdermabrasion…

  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduces melasma
  • Improves acne
  • Reduces enlarged pores

  • Improvement in overall skin health

Who is a good candidate for microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is completely non-invasive and non-ablative. It can be used on all skin colors and skin types. It doesn’t cause hyperpigmentation, as more ablative procedures sometimes do. In reality, just about everyone could use microdermabrasion at Skin Solutions Medical Aesthetics to brighten their complexion and improve their skin quality. We could all use a little more exfoliation on our facial skin.

How is microdermabrasion performed?

When you come to our Williamsville offices for your microdermabrasion session, we start by cleaning your facial skin with a special cleansing gel. Next, our aesthetician slowly moves the diamond-tipped wand across your entire face, instantly vacuuming off the abraded dead skin cells. The degree of exfoliation is determined by the amount of suction employed and the number of passes made over the skin surface. The treatment takes from 20-30 minutes for the face.

If you want to treat other areas such as the neck, your session may last up to an hour. Because microdermabrasion only targets the superficial layer of the skin, topical numbing isn’t necessary.

How long does a microdermabrasion treatment take?

he length of your microdermabrasion session usually runs between 30 and 45 minutes. There isn’t any downtime afterward. These are great procedures to have during lunchtime because you can return to work or your normal activities immediately afterward.

Are there any products I should avoid before my microdermabrasion session?

There really isn’t much you need to do to prepare for your microdermabrasion at Smooth Solutions, but you should avoid the use of Retin-A or other skin exfoliators for from 1-3 days before your treatment. It’s also a good idea to avoid sun exposure or spray tanning for at least one week before.

You’ll also need to wait at least three weeks after having any type of laser skin procedure before having microdermabrasion.

If you’ve been on Accutane, you won’t be eligible for microdermabrasion until you’ve been off it for a certain period of time. Dr. Bertolino will discuss this with you.

Is microdermabrasion good for your skin? Is it safe?

These treatments at Smooth Solutions are completely non-invasive and don’t require any recovery. There isn’t any risk of infection or the like, as only the outer epidermis is exfoliated. These are not deep penetrating procedures (in contrast to laser resurfacing or a medium chemical peel, for instance), and they don’t remove large amounts of skin. You may have some light peeling and your skin may feel a little tight for a day or so after your treatment, but a good moisturizer is all you need. There won’t be any crusting or downtime.

Who should avoid having microdermabrasion?

The only people who shouldn’t have microdermabrasion are those whose acne, eczema, or psoriasis are active. You need to wait until the breakout or flareup passes and your skin calms. At that point, you could have this treatment. As mentioned above, you cannot have this treatment while on Accutane.

Can I wear makeup after my microdermabrasion?

These are really the ultimate skin cleaning procedures, removing dead skin cells, impurities, oils, and other stuff from your outer skin. Your skin will be a little red and feel somewhat dry for about 24 hours afterward. It’s best to simply apply moisturizer. If you can let your skin breathe that’s a good idea, but wearing makeup won’t hurt anything.

How many microdermabrasion treatments will I need?

There is no limit to these procedures. Some of our Smooth Solutions patients come in once every month or two to have microdermabrasion. They like to keep their skin exfoliated and looking great. For new patients, we generally recommend between six and 10 treatments initially. This gets your skin into better shape moving forward. These are spaced two weeks apart. From there, it depends on you. Many patients feel that they maintain their skin quality with a session every two or three months.

How long will my results last after microdermabrasion?

The results from your microdermabrasion usually last about one month. That is the cycle for your skin to fully regenerate.

Is microdermabrasion painful?

These treatments only target the outermost layer of your epidermis. The goal is to use the diamond tip to lightly remove the dead skin cells, oil, and buildup. It could seem as if these would be painful treatments, but they’re not. We’ve had patients equate the feeling to that of the lick from a cat’s tongue or as a gritty facial massage. They aren’t painful and don’t require any topical numbing beforehand.
