Smooth Solutions Medical Aesthetics offers several skin resurfacing alternatives. The most popular method is Cutera Pearl™.
What is the Cutera Pearl Laser?
Pearl is the “one laser to choose” to renew your skin’s surface with quick, visible results. Pearl treats fine lines on the face and neck, uneven skin texture and light & dark spots caused by sun damage.
What Are the Benefits of Laser Skin Resurfacing With Cutera Pearl?
The Pearl laser replaces the entire top sun-damaged layer of skin with new healthy skin. Simultaneously, it sends heat to deeper layers of the skin stimulating new collagen growth, filling out and decreasing fine lines and wrinkles. New collagen growth continues for 4 to 6 weeks post-treatment. The combination of new skin and decreased wrinkles results in a healthier, more youthful appearance.
Unlike “fractional” treatments, Pearl treats the entire face, minimizing the number of required treatments. Typically, only 1 to 2 treatments are necessary to renew your skin.
How Does the Cutera Pearl Laser Work?
The Pearl laser delivers pulses of 2790nm wavelength light to a target area. The laser energy stimulates accelerated cellular sloughing, meaning that your uppermost layer of skin cells will flake and fall away shortly after your procedure. Additionally, the laser energy permeates into deeper layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production that helps remodel the skin's surface. Even with the opportunity to achieve significantly rewarding results in as little as one treatment, the Cutera Pearl laser treatment incurs less downtime than traditional CO2 and Erbium laser treatments.
Who is an Ideal Candidate for the Cutera Pearl Laser Procedure?
You may be a great candidate for Pearl laser skin resurfacing if you're just starting to see signs of aging and sun damage. You may also be a great candidate if you've had these concerns for a while and are now ready to correct them so you can feel great about your skin again! Our staff has considerable training in the area of skin rejuvenation. A brief consultation and examination of your skin will enable us to create a treatment program tailored to your needs.
How Should I Prepare for My Procedure?
After your consultation, your provider may give you detailed instructions to prepare for your treatment. Generally, laser resurfacing clients are strongly encouraged to wear sunscreen every day and to avoid sun exposure as much as possible in the few weeks before treatment. It is also beneficial to slightly increase water intake. This can help your skin recover more quickly from the laser treatment. Finally, your provider may advise you to avoid certain medications and supplements. Generally, there is very little risk of bleeding associated with laser resurfacing. There can be, however, a slight risk of bruising to go along with post-treatment redness. By avoiding blood thinners for several days before your appointment, you may decrease your chances of experiencing exaggerated side effects.
What is the Recovery Like After Undergoing the Laser Procedure?
You can expect to look sunburned for a few days after your Pearl laser treatment. As soon as your procedure is done, your provider will apply some form of an ointment to augment the natural barrier that forms on your skin. You will receive information regarding aftercare, including tips for washing your face. Primarily, it is important that you keep your skin moist for the three to five days that cellular turnover is happening. You will not be able to wear sunscreen during this phase, so you must find other ways to protect your skin. Since the recovery time is brief, you may choose to simply stay indoors during the daytime. If you go outside, wear a wide-brimmed hat or other protective clothing. You may resume wearing makeup about four days after your treatment. As the dead and damaged skin begins to flake and peel, it is imperative that you refrain from rubbing, exfoliating, and picking.
How Long Will it Take Before I See Results?
Laser skin resurfacing encourages prolonged collagen remodeling. Once your redness subsides, you may notice that your skin looks brighter and smoother. However, the complete effect of your Pearl Laser treatment may become most apparent after three months.

Is the Cutera Pearl Laser Procedure Painful?
Because the Cutera Pearl laser affects both the epidermis and the deeper layers of your skin, you might imagine that the treatment is painful. It isn't! Patients describe this procedure as numerous momentary pinches on the skin. You may feel this or a snapping sensation, as well as slight warming deeper in your skin. None of these sensations are painful.
What Happens During the Cutera Pearl Laser Procedure?
During a Pearl treatment, the top layer of the skin is treated with pulses of light. A portion of the epidermis (skin surface) is gently removed and a natural protective dressing is formed on the skin’s surface. Most patients feel a series of brief pinches during the treatments. After 3-4 days, the protective dressing peels off revealing new, healthy, vibrant skin underneath.
