What is the Pearl Laser?
The Pearl Laser is a laser resurfacing device that has a specific wavelength (2790) that is very agreeable to the skin. It has a special 2190 wavelength for scar removal. Great for softening skin, exfoliation, and decreasing the appearance of dark spots from aging, acne or sun damage. We love to use PRP right after the procedure to finish off the skin giving it a better glow and new vascularity for a healthy, natural finish.
Who is a candidate for the Pearl Laser?
Laser treatments, even fractional resurfacing like the Pearl Laser, are best suited for light to medium skin tones. The thermal energy from laser light is typically not appropriate for darker skin due to the risk of pigment changes. Adults interested in correcting sun damage, some signs of aging, warts, scars, and other concerns may be good candidates for Pearl fractional laser treatment. This device is designed to gently, effectively work on even the delicate skin around the eyes and mouth.
Patient Testimonial
“I was recently bitten by a husky dog across the center of my cheek. After discussing the dog bite with a plastic surgeon I was told to call them after a year of the date of my injury. They would then perform surgery to remove the scar with a fine line across the center of my face. I contacted Smooth Solutions, and discussed my concerns with Dr. Jack Bertolino. Microneedling was suggested. I have had three applications. The scar has been dramatically reduced. Also recommended was Pearl Laser. I am totally satisfied with the results. This was a very emotional time in my life. Dr Bertolino was very supportive, and has made a great difference. Thank you Dr. Bertolino!” – S.L.
Are there any risks to the Pearl Laser?
Potential side effects following a Pearl laser treatment include pigment changes, burns, scarring, and bacterial skin infections. These risks can be managed by obtaining treatment from a properly-trained provider and by following the recommended aftercare instructions carefully.
Is any preparation needed for treatment?
Before fractional laser resurfacing, it is necessary to prevent any unnecessary inflammation in the skin. Your provider may recommend that you avoid smoking and certain topical ingredients. Examples include alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxyl products (AHA/BHA), hydroquinone, and retinol/retinoid products. It is also necessary to avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure in the week before treatment.
Pearl Laser Procedure
The laser treatment itself may require only 15 to 20 minutes. However, the overall appointment may last an hour to an hour and a half. This allows time for the provider to apply a topical anesthetic to the skin and for that medication to become fully activated. During the laser treatment, patients may feel momentary pulses of heat as the laser creates micro-injuries in the upper layers of the skin. It is these microchannels that stimulate robust collagen production. After the entire area has been treated, the provider may apply a serum, moisturizer, or, our favorite, platelet-rich plasma.
What is recovery like?
One of the advantages of the Pearl laser is that it is designed to achieve maximum tissue rejuvenation without significant side effects. Patients can expect a few days of swelling and redness after their fractional laser treatment. These can be noticeable enough to want to take some time off work and away from social settings. While there is swelling and redness, there is minimal discomfort, if any, during the brief recovery period after the laser procedure. To promote optimal tissue regeneration, patients may be instructed to apply ointment to the skin one or more times a day for about five days. It is necessary to avoid sun exposure while collagen remodeling is taking place.
The improvements achieved with Pearl laser resurfacing may start to appear about a week after treatment. However, the procedure works by stimulating collagen production in the dermis. Where there is more collagen, the skin is brighter, smoother, firmer, and more resilient. Full tissue remodeling takes place over a few months, so patients may see gradual rejuvenation throughout this time.
What can I expect from my results?
Fractional laser therapy is characterized by its exposure to only a fraction of the skin. The laser beam creates a pattern of micro-injuries that look like tiny dots. After the procedure, the body goes to work healing the tiny injuries. It does so by creating new collagen and, as a result of the collagen remodeling that takes place, the skin becomes firmer, more consistent in its tone and texture, and more youthful-looking overall. Patients can expect to see results starting about one week after the procedure. These results can last many months with good sun protection and skin care.
How Long do the Results Last?
The length of time the results last from Pearl Laser is dependent on how well you care for your skin. Depending on the sun damage you receive after the procedure, the results will last an average of 3 to 5 years.
Can I combine the pearl laser treatment with other procedures?
Yes. The Pearl laser is gentle and effective at addressing multiple concerns simultaneously. However, some patients who want more profound rejuvenation may want to include ancillary procedures, such as treatments that may lift certain areas of the skin. Our experienced team provides personal care to every patient to ensure their concerns and goals are heard and addressed utilizing the most efficient modalities. In addition to Pearl fractional laser therapy, we offer microneedling, chemical peels, vampire facials, and more.
