Dysport And Xeomin Buffalo NY

What is Dysport?

Get rid of those unwanted facial lines with Dysport®. A U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved injectable for temporarily lessening or eliminating moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Like BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport injectable is placed directly into the muscle underneath a furrow, weakening the muscle to the point where it cannot contract.

How safe is Dysport?

Dysport®, like all neuromodulators, is made from the botulinum toxin type A. This is the same material used in Botox® and Xeomin®. Back in the 1950s scientists discovered that when the botulinum toxin was injected in minute amounts into a muscle it kept the muscle from contracting for a period of time. That’s how neuromodulators erase wrinkles that form due to muscle contractions under the skin.

Neuromodulators have been injected millions of times across the globe, and they have proven to be safe and very effective. The main side effect is some redness, tenderness, and slight swelling at the injection sites. Some people can develop a slight headache after these injections. These issues typically resolve within a day or so.

The main potential side effect with Dysport® is if it is injected into the wrong muscle. That can lead to unintended issues, such as a drooping eyelid. That’s not a problem with an experienced injector such as Dr. Jack Bertolino.

What are the side effects of Dysport injections?

Side effects of Dysport® are usually moderate and temporary and there is no down time after receiving injections.

Possible side effects at injection site:

  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising

What is Xeomin®?

Xeomin® is a prescription medication used to effectively treat intramuscular conditions such as blepharospasm, or abnormal involuntary closing of the eyelid.

Xeomin is injected into the affected muscles in order to reduce involuntary muscle spasms. Xeomin helps modify contractions of the spasms. This is achieved by inhibiting a body chemical called acetylcholine from signaling all of the nerves within the muscle to contract.

How safe is Xeomin?

Xeomin® is a neuromodulator like Dysport® and Botox®. So, all the same is true with how it works and potential side effects. But there is one significant difference with Xeomin® for some patients. Both Dysport® and Botox® have some added proteins in their formulation in addition to the botulinum toxin. Xeomin®, however, doesn’t have these added proteins. That’s why Xeomin® has been deemed “the naked injectable” in the aesthetic world because it is basically only botulinum toxin and nothing else. This could be an important aspect of Xeomin® for a patient who has had reaction issues with Dysport® or Botox®.

Side Effects of Xeomin®

Most of the side effects of Xeomin® are mild and temporary. However, if the following symptoms occur seek medical attention immediately:

  • Difficulty speaking, swallowing or breathing
  • Muscle weakness throughout the body
  • Double vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Change in voice quality
  • Problems with articulation
  • Loss of bladder control

Am I A Good Candidate For Dysport® Or Xeomin Injections?

Whether or not Dysport® or Xeomin® is right for you depends on the wrinkles you are seeking to erase and where they are on your face. Dysport® and Xeomin® only work on “dynamic” wrinkles that form on the surface skin when our facial muscles contract when we form certain expressions. When these neuromodulators are injected into these muscles it blocks the nerve messages sent from the muscle to the brain. The brain never receives the message to contract the muscle, so the muscle remains at rest and the wrinkle that forms on the surface skin above is erased.

Dynamic wrinkles form on the upper third of the face, the expressive area. These are crow’s feet at the outside of the eyes, glabellar/frown lines between the eyebrows, and forehead lines. If these are the wrinkles and lines you want to get rid of, Dysport® or Xeomin® are the answer.

If your wrinkles are due to sun damage, declining collagen production, personal habits such as smoking, and other factors they are known as “static” wrinkles. They show themselves at all times and they have nothing to do with muscle contractions. These lines, creases, and areas of volume loss occur on the mid to lower face. Neuromodulators have no effect on these wrinkles. They are the domain of dermal fillers.

What is the recovery process like after having Dysport or Xeomin injections?

There isn’t any recovery. You can go right back to work or your normal activities immediately after your injections. That makes both Dysport® and Xeomin® perfect “lunchtime treatments.”

The only thing you should be cognizant of — and you wouldn’t call it recovery — would be to not rub the injection sites for the first 24 hours after your session with Dr. Bertolino. This could cause the neuromodulator to migrate to an unintended muscle. That could create problems such as a drooping eyelid.

How long does it take for Dysport and Xeomin to take effect?

All neuromodulators take some time to provide their wrinkle and line erasing results. That’s because the botulinum toxin needs to block the nerve messages from the muscle to the brain, and this takes a few days.

Dysport® usually fully takes effect in about three days. Xeomin® can take one day longer, from 3 to 4 days, to fully take effect.
