Is an IPL Photofacial Right for You? How to Know If You Qualify

Dr. Jack Bertolino is a board-certified family physician at Smooth Solutions Medical Aesthetics in Williamsville, New York. He and his professional team can determine if a photofacial is the right fit for your skin.

What Photofacials Can Treat

Photofacials, especially those done with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), are often used for tackling everything from sun spots and redness to broken capillaries and blotchy skin tone. They’re also a popular choice for people dealing with rosacea or lingering discoloration from years of sun exposure.

The light energy reaches beneath the surface of your skin to either break apart unwanted pigment or jumpstart collagen production. When done consistently as part of a series, photofacials can visibly smooth out tone and texture, leaving you with clearer skin.

Who Is a Good Candidate for IPL?

IPL tends to work best on lighter skin tones (usually Fitzpatrick skin types I to III), where there’s a noticeable contrast between the skin and the pigmentation being treated. If you have fair to medium skin and you’re dealing with things like sunspots, redness, or uneven tone, there’s a good chance you’re a strong candidate.

On the other hand, very dark or deeply tanned skin can be more prone to side effects like hyperpigmentation. IPL isn’t usually recommended for people with melasma, active infections, or certain underlying conditions either.

If you’re pregnant or taking medications that make your skin more sensitive to light, IPL treatments will likely need to wait until later.

How Dr. Bertolino Evaluates Your Skin

At Smooth Solutions, Dr. Jack Bertolino assesses your skin in detail before recommending IPL. He uses a photodocumentation system to track your skin’s condition and reviews your health history, current skincare habits, and any previous treatments. This careful evaluation helps reduce risk and makes sure the treatment is safe for your skin type.
