What is microneedling and what conditions can it improve?

Poor skin texture and tone can be a serious impact on one’s appearance. Aging skin can be dry, dull, and loose, causing the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Patients might also deal with poor complexion, acne, rosacea, and a wide range of other skin issues that can be difficult to cover up with cosmetics. Individuals who are looking to rejuvenate their appearance may be advised by Dr. Jack Bertolino of Smooth Solutions Medical Aesthetics in Williamsville, NY that microneedling can help!

What is microneedling?

Dr. Jack Bertolino describes microneedling as a procedure that is performed by a professional at his practice that can stimulate skin cell turnover and the production of collagen. This is achieved by creating tiny micro-punctures in the skin using a device with hundreds of tiny needles. The device causes wounds on the superficial layer of the skin. In doing so, it tells the skin to start healing, stimulating collagen for recovery. With routine microneedling procedures, patients can dramatically enhance the appearance of their skin and achieve better skin texture and tone.

What can microneedling be used for?

In addition to improving the skin’s overall health and appearance, microneedling can also be used for patients who would like to treat conditions such as:

  • Large, open pore size
  • Poor skin texture and tone
  • Skin laxity
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Age spots/sun spots
  • Surgical or trauma scars
  • Stretch marks

Who is an idea candidate for microneedling?

The best candidate for this procedure is an adult patient of any ethnicity who wants to enhance their skin’s appearance and improve its health. Patients might not be a good candidate for treatment if they are pregnant, have open wounds, have recently undergone radiation therapy for cancer, or have certain conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. A full evaluation is recommended to find out if a patient is a good fit for this or alternative skin treatments available at our practice.

3 Things to Expect from Microneedling

The last thing that you probably saw yourself doing was sitting in a medial chair in Dr. Bertolino’s office about to have your face punctured with hundreds of tiny needles. Although that sounds a bit frightening, it actually isn’t. In fact, microneedling has become one of the most popular minimally invasive procedures that we offer our patients because it gives them great results without them having to go under the knife. To help you learn a little bit more about this treatment, let’s discuss three things that you can expect from it.

Numbing Cream

First things first, Dr. Bertolino doesn’t want you to be in pain or a lot of discomfort. Before we start microneedling, we will numb your skin with a topical anesthetic. Once the anesthetic has sunk in, we will then start the microneedling treatment.

Redness

Directly after your microneedling treatment, your skin will be a little bit red and sensitive— this is completely normal. We do encourage patients to take the rest of the day off of work in order for their skin to heal and without having to feel self-conscious about the redness in their skin. Luckily, this should die down shortly so that you won’t have to go into hiding.

Real Results

Depending on what we are using microneedling for and how well your skin responds to each session, you can expect to see real results after just one or two treatments. During your initial consultation with Dr. Bertolino, he will be able to give you a better idea of just how many sessions he thinks you will need.

The Fun Facts About Microneedling

microneedlingWhen you hear the term “microneedling” you may want to run for the hills when imagining hundreds of tiny needles being injected into your skin. However, the actual process of microneedling is a lot less dramatic than the name suggests and it will give you results that will have you glad you never ran up that hill. This article will discuss a few of the benefits of microneedling and why you may want to consider it. Read on to learn more.

How Does It Work?

The best part about the microneedling procedure is that unlike your nightmares where you look like Hellraiser, microneedling is done using a device that looks like a pen. By moving the pen across your face, hundreds of tiny microscopic holes will be made without causing you very much— if any— pain in the process.

Once the holes have been made, your skin will naturally work to repair itself. In the process of repair, your skin will produce more collagen and elasticity— helping to fill in fine lines and wrinkles across your face and forehead.

What Is the Procedure Like?

As a non-invasive procedure, you will be able to come into Jack Bertolino’s office and get the treatment done in less than an hour. Plus, because it is non-invasive, there won’t be a need for any anesthesia. If you do start to feel uncomfortable during your microneedling procedure, we can apply a topical numbing gel to help ease the pain. Once the procedure is done, you will notice a bit of redness but should be able to get back to your daily activities.

What Are Results Like?

One of the biggest things to know about microneedling is that the more frequently you get it done, the greater the results you will receive. The great news though is that most patients start to see real results after just one treatment. Most patients start to see an improvement in their skin’s texture, less visible wrinkles, less visible scars, and an overall improvement in pigmentation.

Microneedling is a fast and easy way to help improve your complexion. If you would like to learn more about microneedling or if you would like to schedule an appointment with Dr. Jack Bertolino, contact our office today!

An Introduction to Collagen Induction Therapy

It’s time to give your fine lines and wrinkles the boot! The holidays are just around the corner and with them come good times with friends and loved ones and festivities galore.

One of the newest and most popular minimally invasive treatments for fine lines and wrinkles is Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) also known as Micro-Needling.

How does it work?

  • Using tiny needles on a medical-grade roller, evenly spaced puncture wounds are made on the skin. The treatment stimulates your body’s natural collagen by generating a wound-healing response – damaging the skin encourages the body to produce new elastin and collagen which thickens and plumps up the skin. This softens fine lines, wrinkles and improves the skin’s texture and tone. The micro-channels also allow serums, gels and platelet rich plasma (PRP) to be more effectively absorbed. CIT can be used on the face and the body.

CIT is suitable for all skin types. You would be an ideal candidate if you want to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, slow the onset of the aging process or improve the appearance of scarring.

Before undergoing treatment, a consultation with Dr. Bertolino is advised to ensure CIT is the right treatment for you.

Prior to a CIT treatment, a topical anesthetic is applied to minimize any discomfort. The CIT roller is then applied to the skin, creating evenly spaced, tiny puncture wounds. The length of the needles on the roller will vary depending on how deep into the skin the needles need to penetrate. The deeper the penetration, the more dramatic the results. Treatment can take anywhere from 15-20 minutes depending on the area being treated, with downtime of one to two days.

Following treatment, your skin will be slightly pink; you may experience some mild bleeding and bruising. A series of two to five treatments is usually recommended to achieve maximum results. You should see full benefits within four to six weeks.

GET YOUR “LOVELY” ON FOR THE HOLIDAYS! Dr. Bertolino offers treatment packages based on the areas to be treated. Call for a consultation appointment, today: (716) 633-6100.
