Teen-aged acne bothering you in your 30s, 40s, 50s? We can help

acneIn a perfect world, by the time you notice your first troubling wrinkle, your acne would be long gone. Unfortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Grown-ups are often surprised to realize that some level of acne is a lifetime affliction. And in fact, low-grade, persistent acne has been found to be particularly common among women in their 20s, 30s and 40s. But adult men struggle, too, often tied to face and body hair.

The bumpy truth is that all those factors related to being alive — such as diet, stress and hormones — mix with dirt, oil and dead skin cells, and conspire to keep our skin in perpetual adolescence.

So what to do?

Well, there are certainly lots of products — over-the-counter, prescription, topical solutions and pills – designed to help teens and adults better manage the frustrations of acne. But maybe your insurance no longer covers prescriptions past the teen years. Or you don’t want to take antibiotics again for your condition. And those store-bought creams don’t seem to be doing the trick.

At Smooth Solutions we can assess your skin issues and create an adult acne treatment plan that fits you and your lifestyle. To get started, simply call us for an appointment at 716.633.6100. Here’s an idea of what you can expect:

  • We will start by advising you to stay calm about your breakouts because stress is such a contributing factor.
  • We’ll ask about your sleep habits and remind you how much eight hours of sleep each night can help your skin rest and regenerate.
  • And even though sweat can exacerbate your bumps, we probably will advise you start or continue a workout routine.
  • While you should definitely treat your acne, stay away from those stronger cleansers and medicines that you might have considered in your younger years. You don’t want to dry out or irritate your skin because that will also cause breakouts.

Finally, we want you to discover clearCONCEPT™, a highly effective treatment we use at Smooth Solutions to treat acne and acne scarring. So learn more by calling today.

The Skinny on Microdermabrasion

microdermabrasionWhile microdermabrasion is not as popular as Botox, this facial rejuvenation procedure deserves the same amount of attention as the popular injectable. Many of our patients are not aware that microdermabrasion is quite effective in its own right.

How microdermabrasion works
Microdermabrasion is a controlled, non-invasive method that removes dead skin cells in the outermost layers of the skin to stimulate collagen growth in the middle and deeper layers. Collagen is a protein serving multiple functions in the body, one of which is keeping your skin plump, supple, and resilient.

During the procedure, a handheld device is applied into the skin’s top layers. The entire treatment takes roughly 30 minutes for the face and 20 minutes for the neck.

Who should have microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion, whether it’s a single treatment or multiple sessions, can address the following issues:

  • The appearance of enlarged pores
  • Mild to moderate acne scarring
  • Dry, dull skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation issues such as sun spots or age spots

Individuals with highly sensitive skin should not have microdermabrasion. For more information on microdermabrasion and other facial rejuvenation alternatives, give us a call. We’d love to hear from you!

Liposuction: A Little Goes a Long Way!

liposuctionIn 2014, liposuction was the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery in the country. At our practice, we noticed the same trend. Generally, men and women seek liposuction because it eliminates pockets of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise efforts.

The following examples portray how a quick, non-invasive liposuction procedure goes a long way.

  • Liposuction can help restore your pre-baby curves following childbirth. There’s no use worrying about those post-childbirth muffin tops and love handles because liposuction, often done together with a tummy tuck, will help you turn that flab to fab!
  • Fat reduction via liposuction in the neck and jawline can help you achieve the naturally slim, smooth, and beautiful neckline you’ve always coveted. Neck liposuction may be done along with a neck lift or Botox injections to further enhance the neck area.
  • For males suffering from gynecomastia (abnormal breast enlargement), a liposuction procedure will not only help you remove excess fat in the chest area but also remove the source of embarrassment and self-esteem issues associated with gynecomastia.
  • Liposuction can tighten those jiggly arms! For most women, tricep dips are not enough to reduce fat and tone the upper arms. An arm lift may be done if loose skin is also a concern.
  • Unattractive bra rolls can be eliminated with liposuction, too!

Dr. Bertolino’s Medical Mission to Nepal and Tibet

I discovered the Global Medical Foundation purely by accident while at a cosmetic training course in Iowa late last year. One of the lead physicians for this noble cause was also learning new techniques in cosmetic enhancement. When he gave our group the information and said this years trip would be to Nepal (Kathmandu) and Tibet, he got my attention. I had not done a mission since the 1980’s and felt it was time for me to go based on my age and status at this time of life.

While in Kathmandu, which is very poor to begin with, I was able to see another side of life. I was able to put my efforts forth through the Outpatient Medical and Gyn Clinics, helping the needy in the most limited of ways, but something is better than nothing. The Group was able to visit another area in Nepal, Pokhara, as well as Tibet, and see the Podala Palace where the Dali Lamas are entombed. As well as Mount Everest.

The outpouring of gratitude and respect from the poor people of Nepal was genuine as well as wonderful. As you know a massive 7.8 earthquake hit Kathmandu and everest causing great death and destruction. Our foundation will be making a good well gesture sending funds for the hospital we worked for when we were there. Next February the Global Medical Foundation and myself will be heading for another mission to the Phillippines.

The new international friends I’ve made both professional and socially will last a lifetime!
