3 Easy Ways to Detox

detoxThis time of year is all about feeling restored and rejuvenated. And because winter is a time of year where you eat richer foods and you’re more sedentary than usual, you may have gained a few pounds over the past month. Spring clean your body this month by getting rid of all the toxins in it. By making three simple changes to your diet, you can easily detox your body and hopefully lose a few lb’s in the process. This article will discuss three ways that you can detox this spring. Read on to learn more.

Drink More Water

Drinking more water is the number one way you can clean out your body and get rid of toxins while doing so. The more water you drink, the more you will excrete it through sweat and urine— leaving your body cleaner and healthier than before. As a suggestion, try carrying around a water bottle with you wherever you go. Remember that you should be drinking at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.

Stop Drinking Alcohol

If you are a regular drinker, this tip is going to be especially difficult to accomplish. However, alcohol can do damage to central organs like your liver. To help cleanse your liver and get it functioning properly, stop drinking alcohol altogether.

Eat More Vegetables

When was the last time you ate a vegetable that wasn’t covered in butter or salad dressing? To help clean out your body and get rid of toxins, consider loading up your plate full of vegetables. Filled with vitamins and minerals that your body needs for fuel, eating a diet rich in vegetables will make you feel like a new person. If you fill up on vegetables, you won’t have as strong of a desire to eat things like cookies, candy, and chips.

Detoxing your body doesn’t have to involve crazy things like cayenne pepper and lemon water. By simply drinking more water, stopping alcohol use, and eating more vegetables, you can cleanse your body and restore it. Don’t let Cooler Weather Wreck your Skin!

fall and winter skin careWe are well on our way into the Fall and Winter months, and this means that your dermatologic needs are changing, and quickly. You may have read headlines about Fall Skincare Tips or other ways to protect your skin after summer. If you’re like millions of other people, you may have found yourself skipping over such tips. Perhaps, when viewing such nonsense, you even had an inkling that such warnings were, well, nonsense! That’s nonsense!

Here’s what the cooler weather could be doing to your skin, and why it matters.

Hydration, please!
When we feel so parched after a day in the sun, it can be hard to imagine that cooler temperatures can be just as harsh on our outermost layer of tissue. In fact, many of the skin problems that cause the most irritation and sensitivity stem from dryness at the change of this particular season.

Because we meet cooler seasons with a renewed enjoyment of hot showers or baths, our skin gets a double-whammy. You don’t have to forego your morning steam in order to save your skin; just switch up a few products. Instead of using bar soap, lather up with an extra-moisturizing shower gel. Instead of applying any old lotion, slather on a thick, creamy body butter – preferably one without alcohol.

Some TLC Couldn’t Hurt, Either!
Treatments such as facials, chemical peels, micro-needling, and microdermabrasion may seem luxuriously pampering. They are. However, these treatments should not be reserved for some kind of special occasion; they are necessary aspects of skin health, and they can be excellent for a little TLC to mitigate summertime sun damage. The purpose of many of these treatments is to encourage collagen remodeling. As the skin absorbs UVA radiation, the fibrous strands of collagen that keep skin firm and resilient break down. The cool winter months are a great time to encourage collagen proliferation.

We are happy to help you explore the treatments that will reveal your inner glow now and throughout every season. Call Smooth Solutions Medical Aesthetics at (716) 633-6100 for a convenient appointment in our Williamsville office.

Quality of Life is Vital. Why Put It Off?

As we all have found out as we age, life can be difficult. Technology although good has made life more hectic, not to mention politics and just dealing with the day to day hassles of ordinary life. Quality of life, as well as good health is a necessary part of living. Whether it’s a well deserved vacation, putting children through school or just feeling better and having that special relationship with someone you love is really what is all about.

For the longest time women have found hormone replacement as they age to be a fearful undertaking. The problem was, and is a lack of understanding by the public and the medical community. Since the early 1980’s Premarin (Estrogen) was found to cause certain cancers in women. The problem was that the word estrogen was not defined. Estrogen is a class, women have 3 estrogens (men one). It is knowing and receiving the right combination, as well as progesterone and testosterone that make a huge difference. Remember your brain is the main focus (as well as bone and muscle health), that gives back quality to an aging life. Take short term memory and libido, both brain functions, the sex hormones, as well as a functioning thyroid give humans drive and vitality. For year’s doctors and patients were fooled into thinking antidepressants, anti anxiety drugs and sleeping pills made a difference. They are band aids only. The problem is simple aging.

Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy(BHRT) has for the last 15-20 years given women and men the vitality, clear thinking and sexual desire often forgotten over time. BHRT through pellet insertion gives a smooth transition to better health and quality of life. Most patients get a 4 month benefit before re-insertion. Hot flashes, insomnia and mood swings gently dissipate over 10-14 days. No peaks and valleys.

The other side of women’s health is totally mechanical. Hormone depletion, hysterectomy and vaginal deliveries lead to laxity, urinary stress incontinence, anorgasmia, painful intercourse and extreme dryness due to thinning of the vaginal mucosa (tissue). ThermiVa (by Thermi Aesthetics) has developed a proprietary technology, using radio-frequency waves to restore sexual well being and stop urinary incontinence and leakage. No more incontinence pads which add up monetarily. ThermiVa tightens, restores the anatomical G-spot to its functioning place and strengthens the pelvic floor muscles to restore urinary control. No more Kegel exercises that insurance companies want you to do with NO effect. Relationships improve for both parties because ThermiVa improves the vascular supply, thereby thickening naturally thin vaginal tissue. No more creams and gels that inhibit most relationships. Three treatments over 3 months with a yearly maintenance makes the difference, no pain no downtime.

Did you ever think you could get back what you once had? Remember, it’s a double edged sword. BHRT supplies needed brain and bodily functions for women and men. Drive, vitality and a good night’s sleep are important factors in healthily aging. Women can also fix the functional side of vaginal health as well as urinary issues to truly get back what time has taken away.

At Smooth Solutions Medical Aesthetics, we take care of the complete package. We are the first and longest user of ThermiVa and are Western New York’s only BHRT pellet facility.

So get your quality of life back at Smooth Solutions Medical Aesthetics, where we not only want you to look good, but feel good as well.

Your Kids and The New York Summer Sun – A Primer

skin care for summerThe glaring sun of a New York summer can be damaging and brutal when it comes to your kids. They are outside, more than likely all day, wearing shorts or swimming at the beach or pool, while their skin is exposed to the damaging UV and UVB rays of the sun. That’s why it’s important to protect your child’s skin, every day. Read on to learn more:

  • Keep your children out of the sun during the hours of peak UV rays, between10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Babies under six months of age should be kept out of direct sunlight.
  • Use a sunscreen made for children with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30, and apply it 15 to 30 minutes before going into the sun. No sunscreen is truly waterproof. It must be applied every one to two hours, particularly if your child spends a lot of time in the water.
  • The signs of a sunburn usually appear six to twelve hours after exposure. If your child’s burn is simply warm, painful and red, it can be treated at home by applying cool compresses to the burned areas or bathing the child in cool water. You also can give acetaminophen to help relieve any pain. A sunburn may also cause blistering, fever, chills, headache, and a general feeling of illness.
  • Your child doesn’t have to be seriously burned in order to be harmed by the sun’s rays. The effects of sun exposure are cumulative – even moderate exposure during childhood can contribute to wrinkling, freckling and skin cancer later in life.
  • If fever, chills, headache, a general feeling of illness, or blisters accompany the sunburn, call your pediatrician. Severe sunburn must be treated like any other serious burn; if the burn is extensive, hospitalization may be required. Blisters can easily become infected, requiring treatment with antibiotics. Severe sunburn may also lead to heatstroke, which is characterized by dehydration and fainting.
  • Don’t assume the sun is only dangerous when it’s shining. It’s not the visible light rays but rather the invisible, ultraviolet rays that are most harmful. It’s possible to be exposed to more UV rays on foggy or hazy days. Exposure is also greater at higher altitudes. And remember that UV and UVB rays reflect off sand, water and snow.

Dr. Bertolino wishes you and your kids a marvelous summer – stay sun-smart, happy and safe!

Say Bye Bye To Winter’s Dry, Itchy, Skin

Winter is almost a fond memory…that windy, cold time of year when your skin spends its days at home or in the office, blasted by heat, begging for moisture. Spring is on its way and with it warmer weather…and dry, moisture sapping office air conditioning. If you find yourself scratching, rubbing or itching your legs and arms or attempting to reach that little spot right in your in the middle of your back…here are a few tips to rid yourself of winter’s dry, flaky skin and prepare your skin for summer:

  • skin careEXFOLIATE – Use a salt or sugar-based exfoliating scrub as a natural way to rid your body of dry, flaky, dead skin that has built up over time. Apply the scrub to your legs and arms and anywhere else on your body your skin is dry. Rub it in for 30-60 seconds and rinse with warm water. Do this in the shower at least twice a week.
  • TRY BODY BRUSHING – Brushing benefits your teeth and hair and can benefit your body as well. Look for a body brush that is specifically designed for skin and dry-brush yourself all over for about 10 minutes a day, preferably before showering or bathing. Although it may sound counter-intuitive, it’s not. You will improve your circulation and notice a difference in your skin within a few days.
  • TAKE SHORTER SHOWERS – Showering or bathing too often, especially in very hot water, strips the natural oils from your skin, causing it to become dry and flaky.
  • MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE – If you aren’t applying a good moisturizer or body butter to your skin every day, you’re asking for “the itches.” Look for a heavy-duty, moisturizing body butter or cream that is specially designed to seal in moisture after you bathe or shower and apply it while your skin is slightly damp.

Make it a priority to take better care of your skin – all of it! Call for a consultation appointment to learn about the variety of non-invasive skincare treatments we offer and get yourself summer-ready: (716) 633-6100.

Are you giving away your age without saying a word?

We all know our faces have trouble keeping their mouths shut about our age. That’s because the skin on the face is up front and present, revealing too much time spent in the sun, poor eating habits, lack of sleep, stress – to name only a few of the culprits. But your face isn’t the only body part telling your secrets.

Your fingers also do the talking
The skin on your hands can also show obvious signs of aging in the form of brown spots caused by sun damage, dryness and loss of fat. Talk to us about laser treatments and fillers that can help rejuvenate your hands.

An area we may not realize can make us appear older than we are
skin careSo we know about our faces, our hands (and probably our necks), but not all of us realize the impact that our breasts can have on how old we look. There are many ways our breasts can age us, but the good news is, your plastic surgeon can help.

Changes that can change your outlook for the better
Few parts of the anatomy go through more unavoidable changes in a woman’s life than her breasts. And sometimes plastic surgery is the only way to undo some of the unwanted changes. Being able to bring back liveliness and proportion not only helps rejuvenate our breasts, but also a more youthful posture and physique.

Enjoying a smaller, better position
Depending on your unique situation, a breast reduction, breast lift – or both – can re-sculpt and reposition the breasts and create a higher and more youthful cleavage line. The procedures can also restore breast form and contour that can turn back the clock. In addition, reductions and lifts can reduce weight and restore natural support to your breasts, helping to eliminate associated back and neck pain.

Take back your youth
Your face, neck, hands – and your breasts – can all start a new conversation about you. Make a consultation appointment today by calling:

Age Spots Got You Down? We Have The Solution…It’s Prolite IPL

You don’t have to give away your age…don’t do it! Even though Father Time, genetics, the environment and the sun have left you with age-revealing spots, the perfect solution is within reach. It’s a non-invasive, breakthrough treatment called PROLITE IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or PhotoRejuvenation therapy. At Smooth Solutions, we use it to rejuvenate your skin, treat age spots, active acne and patches of dark pigment. Additionally, an IPL treatment can be used to treat the appearance of mild acne scars, broken capillaries, dark circles under the eyes, irregular pigmentation and freckles.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

  • Age Spots typically appear on skin that has had the most exposure over the years to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light…the face, the backs of the hands, the shoulders and neck. The use of tanning beds or lamps can also contribute to their development. They are usually small and flat but they can group together making them appear even larger.
  • Age spots commonly develop in people with fair complexions but they are also seen in people with darker complexions.
  • Age spots are usually harmless but they can definitely give away your age.

IPL works by emitting wavelengths of light that are absorbed by brown spots, veins, and red spots. These lesions are gently heated and destroyed. The area to be treated is prepared with a cool gel. Then a hand-piece is used to gently pulse an intense light over the area, penetrating the skin and destroying the melanin-producing cells. The generated heat impairs the vessels or lesions without damaging the skin’s surface. After treatment, the skin is cleaned and a sun block applied. Healing begins immediately, but the lesions may darken before they flake off or are absorbed by the body.

  • Discomfort is minimal and there is little or no downtime.
  • Each treatment takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
  • You can resume normal activities immediately.
  • Sunblock must be worn for at least a month following the treatment.

Exercising Your Face To Reduce Sagging…Is That Effective?

Loose and saggy facial skin seems to be a given of the aging-process. You may have wished for a nonsurgical way to tighten your skin and may have read or heard about facial exercises.

But can facial exercises reduce your sagging skin? The answer is a very qualified “yes.

However, there are some things to consider before you start “working out” on your face.

  • The muscles in your face can increase in size with exercise just as any muscle in body. By adding volume that decreases with aging, you can expect less sagging.
  • But the exercises required involve continuous facial expressions that can actually deepen fine lines and wrinkles. The facial exercise movements encouraged are squinting and puckering, which can contribute to crow’s feet and lines around your mouth.
  • The biggest contributor to agin skin is sun damage…and facial exercises can’t reduce age spots, fine lines or wrinkles that come with years of collective sun damage.
  • It’s impossible for facial exercises to increase the collagen in your face.

What’s the best way to increase volume in the face? Consider Radiesse®, an FDA-approved synthetic, injectable dermal filler that is used to correct fine facial lines and wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds. It is made of calcium-based microspheres which are suspended in a water-based gel.  Radiesse® is injected into your skin through an easy, minimally invasive procedure. The results are immediate and long-lasting. Radiesse® also stimulates your body to produce new collagen. Radiesse® is a safe and effective way to add volume and contour to your face for a younger appearance. In just one or two treatments, you will see a bright, beautiful, natural look that lasts.

At Smooth Solutions, we also offer many other skin care treatment options including IPL (intense pulsed light) Therapy, Photofacial Treatments and Laser Skin Resurfacing that can address the visible signs of aging…that no amount of facial exercise can touch!

Firm and brighten your look for the holidays! Call to book an appointment…now is the perfect time: (716) 633.6100.
