Say Bye Bye To Winter’s Dry, Itchy, Skin

Winter is almost a fond memory…that windy, cold time of year when your skin spends its days at home or in the office, blasted by heat, begging for moisture. Spring is on its way and with it warmer weather…and dry, moisture sapping office air conditioning. If you find yourself scratching, rubbing or itching your legs and arms or attempting to reach that little spot right in your in the middle of your back…here are a few tips to rid yourself of winter’s dry, flaky skin and prepare your skin for summer:

  • skin careEXFOLIATE – Use a salt or sugar-based exfoliating scrub as a natural way to rid your body of dry, flaky, dead skin that has built up over time. Apply the scrub to your legs and arms and anywhere else on your body your skin is dry. Rub it in for 30-60 seconds and rinse with warm water. Do this in the shower at least twice a week.
  • TRY BODY BRUSHING – Brushing benefits your teeth and hair and can benefit your body as well. Look for a body brush that is specifically designed for skin and dry-brush yourself all over for about 10 minutes a day, preferably before showering or bathing. Although it may sound counter-intuitive, it’s not. You will improve your circulation and notice a difference in your skin within a few days.
  • TAKE SHORTER SHOWERS – Showering or bathing too often, especially in very hot water, strips the natural oils from your skin, causing it to become dry and flaky.
  • MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE – If you aren’t applying a good moisturizer or body butter to your skin every day, you’re asking for “the itches.” Look for a heavy-duty, moisturizing body butter or cream that is specially designed to seal in moisture after you bathe or shower and apply it while your skin is slightly damp.

What Do You Know About Elastin and Collagen?

Here’s an item for your winter to-do-list: Make it a priority to take care of your skin to maintain it’s flexibility and firmness. Elastin and Collagen, two important proteins, play a vital role in your skin’s appearance. You have likely heard of them, but how much do you know about them and how they are different?

Skin Care Services

  • The Protein, Elastin, helps keep your skin counter the effects of gravity by helping it maintain its flexibility and elasticity. There is less elastin in your body than collagen, but they work together to keep your skin looking young.
  • The Protein, Collagen, is abundant in your skin, nails, hair, muscles, tendons, and other parts of your body. It is a necessary component of your body’s connective tissue. Collagen helps your skin stay smooth and firm. It also aids in the formation of new skin cells and keeps harmful toxins at bay.

The aging process slowly robs your body of these critical proteins, and as a result, your skin becomes saggy, thin and loose. It is also more easily damaged and more susceptible to the pull of gravity. Wrinkles appear, and along with them, jowls or a double chin.

As impossible as it is to to prevent the march of time, there are some things you can do to protect the elastin and collagen in your body and keep your skin looking young for as long as possible:

  • Avoid UVB and UV sun damage by always wearing sunscreen
  • Stop smoking – it’s responsible for many of the lines and wrinkles that form around the mouth
  • Eat a Balanced Diet; limit sugar and soft drinks
  • Replenish collagen with a dermal filler – We offer a number of cosmetic treatments that can counter the effects of aging. Popular dermal fillers, such as BELOTERO BALANCE®, use hyaluronic acid to restore lost volume to your face and smooth your skin. Others, such as Radiesse®, stimulate your body’s production of collagen, for natural, and long-lasting results.
